shanghai ren jia 上海人家 . with pop & mom

Went to this hidden gem Shanghai Ren Jia 上海人家 at Ang Mo Kio with cheeky before that I thought this is a really good stuff where I must bring pop & mom if they happened to make a trip down to Singapore. And so it does. Moreover, the dinner seems merrier when Wan Chin's parents were in town as well and we decided to hang out together for a day.

Having quite an authentic taste of Shanghai cuisine at rather affordable pricing, the restaurant almost full seated at every single time we passed by. Thanks goodness that they accept phone reservation. However, we still have to place our order after reached the restaurant. Starter of the night, being recommended by the friendly boss, we have this small plate of Shanghai Sour & Spicy Vegetables 上海酸辣菜 ($5).

Next up was the Fried Bean Sprouts 炒豆苗 ($15) which made me feel at home, though slightly overpriced. The taste and texture are really different than typical economic rice stall that I could've found elsewhere.

The boss recommended Shanghai Steamed Bun with Preserved Vegetables and Pork上海梅菜扣肉包  ($13.80) as well. I am a pork lover anyway.

Closer look of the preserved vegetables or some people tend to call the dish as Chinese pickles.

The right way to savour was to place one or two meat slices in the bun.

Added next with preserved vegetables and its black sauce.

Folded up the steamed bun and eat it as a whole.

For something more filling for the night, we ordered a plate of Scallion Noodles with Pork Ribs and Minced Chicken 排骨鸡丁葱油面 ($6) each. The noodles are springy, with the melt-in-your-mouth pork ribs and minced chicken, def a thumbs up which is calling me back to the restaurant again anytime soon.

After the filling noodles, we had two serving of Shanghai Steamed Bun上海小笼包 ($6 each serving). Unlike other Chinese restaurant that serve steamed bun, the Shanghai boss is very particular in this dish that he claimed we shouldn't eat this steamed bun together with ginger slices as they will cover up the original taste of its broth.

Another side dish that I am particularly in love def goes to this plate of Shanghai Spring Roll上海春卷 ($7.20). The inner filling was chewy with its soft-textured vegetables and unknown broth. I really find it indescribable but something great.

Lastly, our gastronomic journey for today will be ended with Glutinous Rice Balls and Osmanthus in Fermented Rice Wine 上海酒酿丸子 ($3). Very subjective one for this, it is either you like or you don't kinda thingy.

I was really glad that all of them were satisfied over this dinner arrangement. Oh my, I will come back soon.

jalan sultan prawn mee @ kallang . with pop & mom

Pop and mom made a trip down to Singapore last weekend. Wondering where should I brought them for some famous local cuisine, here struck my mind of Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee which is located at stone's throw from Kallang MRT. Though Penang Hokkien Mee still remains my favourite, this stall can be considered as one of the similar kind with soup base. Their prawns come in varying size at different prices where we tried out King Prawn's at $10 per bowl for the day. Very generous serving of fresh prawns.

the encounter . 偶遇的街道

Unknowingly, this space has accompanied me in growing up since my secondary year. How time flies. It's been a year plus since I last stepped on the lion city at the moment that I am to living abroad. Enthusiasm towards photography and wanderlust still live in the blood of the 26yo dreamer who you might've known me personally or just-another-one in the blogosphere no matter where am I. And today, simply feel like updating this new photo series of mine - The Encounter 偶遇的街道. Hope you'll like it.

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out.
It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being.
We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.
